Why some people struggle to Tithe

Why do some people have a hard time tithing to the church? Shealynn August from Unwavering Grace Ministry has some thoughts.

Tithing is people giving a portion of their income to the church which is known to be a form of worship and support for its mission. Despite its importance to the church, many people choose not to give. But that doesn't go without saying there are some reasons why people don't give tithe at church:

  • Perception: Some churches can be very focused wrong or give a perspective of being very focused on becoming rich on others. People become reluctant to give under these kinds of circumstances.
  • Issues about Trusting: People sometimes refrain from giving to the church because of the abuse or misuse of funds can sometimes be made known to the public. So they worry that giving would be encouraging this behavior to happen from dishonest leadership in churches.
  • Not Understanding: There are others that sometimes just don't understand that tithing is a form of worship and God honors a "cheerful giver". People may not understand the true commitment and that tithing can be a valuable addition to any income stream in life whether wealthy or more of a modest income household.
  • Adverse Experiences: Some have been pressured, manipulated, or confused about giving in the past. They might have felt like they had to give out of a legalistic approach or God would be upset with them if they didn't.
  • Concerns about Finances: People become hesitant to give at least 10% of their income because they are worried they cannot afford to give. They become concerned that they won't be able to afford everyday life if they give that much of their money.

Tithing can be both meaningful and rewarding in the long run. Giving can help others to deepen their understanding of giving to the Kingdom of God and furthering His work in the world today.

It is beneficial for churches to be completely transparent about how they use their finances and funds throughout the year. Some churches give end-of-year reports that tell you exactly where every dollar goes. Whether it goes to benevolence to help needy families, to help in missions, church dinners, pastoral care, or staff.

Tithing is an important part of the body and church community. It is vital to give, not only for the believer's healthy spiritual growth and life but also for furthering the work of God in communities across the globe.
